Shelton Benjamin

One of my favorite wrestlers is Shelton Benjamin. I was a fan of him when he was in Team Angle, and I became a huge fan when the WWE strapped the proverbial rocket on his back by having him beat HHH on the first Raw after the 2004 draft. After a lengthy run with the intercontinental tile, he has been buried by Creative and placed in a pretty long losing streak. I read a few weeks ago that the WWE looked to cast a heavy-set 50 year old African American woman to play the part of his ‘Mamma’. You can look at this one of two ways: either this will destroy his character forever and he will be released over the summer, or this can improve his character and give him some depth. I really hope it’s the latter. Here now is what I feel might transpire over the course of the next couple of months with the character of Shelton Benjamin and his ‘Mamma’.

Week 1 (Jan 2) – Shelton paces nervously in the parking lot and a car pulls up near him. Out comes his Mamma, Helen. She berates him for not opening her car door and pulls him by the ear all the way to the ring. There she makes him introduce his loving Mamma. She takes the mike and says his losing streak is gonna change, or else Mamma Benjamin will be there for a long long time.

Week 2 – Shelton faces Chavo with Mamma Benjamin cheering on her boy. Chavo wins with the five star, causing Mamma to get in the ring and berate Shelton. He just takes it with his head down and follows her to the back.

Week 4 – After a loss on Heat, Shelton faces Matt Striker and loses to him in his debut match. This causes Mamma to throw a fit. She grabs a mike and says she is gonna turn this streak around, cause it’s obvious my boy cant get the job done.

Royal Rumble – Shelton’s Mamma is backstage and she is seen on her cell phone. She asks if this person can come promptly and you see her smile.

Week 5 – Shelton faces Carlito. Carlito is about to win, but decides to get the apple to spit it into Mamma’s face. Running into the ring from the crowd is Shelton’s old Team Angle teammate, Charlie Haas. Charlie gives Carlito a t-bone suplex and Shelton covers. Charlie hugs Mamma while Shelton looks stunned to see his old partner.

Week 7 – After a Team Angle win on Heat, the two fight Kane and Big Show for the tag belts. They lose after Haas gets the double chokeslam. Post match, Shelton looks disgusted. He looks at his Mamma, who yells Now! Shelton goes to town on Haas. He uses a chair and destroys Charlie with his Mamma cheering on.

Week 8 – Shelton gets a mike and explains the set up. He was mad at Haas for leaving in the first place, and his Mamma helped him find his attitude and the set-up on Charlie. He says he could beat Charlie any day of the week, with Mamma cheering on. Charlie runs out into the ring and chases away Shelton and Mamma.

Week 9 – Charlie defeats Trevor Murdoch, with Shelton on commentary. Charlie chases away Shelton post match, but Mamma comes out and whacks Haas in the head with a frying pan. Shelton continues the assault and leaves Haas laying on the stage.

Week 10 – Raw GM Dusty Rhodes declares a Wrestlemania match between Charlie and Shelton, with the provision that if Charlie wins, Mamma Benjamin is gone from the WWE.

Week 11 – The week before the PPV, Shelton and Murdoch defeat Charlie and Lance Cade. Shelton and Mamma gloat because of their advantage over Charlie Haas.

Wrestlemania – Charlie defeats Shelton in a 15 minute match, culminating in a t-bone from the top rope by Charlie. The crowd chants Na-Na-Na-Na-Goodbye at Mamma.

The next day – In a rematch, Charlie defeats Shelton with special guest ref Kurt Angle. As Kurt raises Charlie’s hand in victory, he gives him the Angle slam. Shelton sides with Kurt and a new feud is born.

Now a few things about the storyline. One, obviously Haas is not an employee of the WWE at the time. His wife even works for TNA. But TNA is very quick to drop angles, and I heard rumors of Charlie rejoining WWE again. He wasn’t given a proper chance to begin anyway, so I’d very much like him to get another shot at the big time. Two, the Mamma storyline may be dropped in a couple of weeks due to poor reaction, or it may go beyond Wrestlemania. I hope it ends then, because Shelton could go far with guys like Angle over some woman playing his Mamma. I also put in that Dusty will be the new GM and Lance Cade will turn face.
