Highlights from Boston 9/30-10/2
Here are the highlights of my trip to Boston to go to a Sports Guy book signing and see the Yanks-Sox series, which the Sox won 2 games to 1.
- $15 bus taking us from NY to Boston. $15! It cost 19 round trip to get from Rutgers-NY and 30 round trip to get from NY-Boston. Go figure.
- Stopping at a Roy Rogers in Fair Haven, Connecticut. I havent eaten there in like 3 years, and it was delicious! Bacon cheeseburger and what had to be the worlds saltiest fries. Still awesome though, we need a rebirth of that franchise immediately.
- Waiting in line at the BU Barnes and Noble for a Sports guy signing. I was with Andrew, who was proudly wearing his Yankee hat, so that got him attacked by many people in Boston. I had on my Mets shirt, but it was a Pedro shirt, so I believe I got a free pass. The person behind us was a semi-pro wrestler, and the girls in front of us were going to ask him if he ever watched Arrested Development. What a group of people.
- Actually meeting 'The Sports Guy' Bill Simmons. This guy is one of my heroes, and I was in awe when I met him. I'm pretty sure I was an incoherent mess, so I was glad he opened the conversation, even if he told me he hated my shirt. Once I turned around, he was back on my side because of the Pedro instance. He wrote in the book that he will always support Pedro, and good luck with my writing, which meant more to me than anything. Awesome guy, I'm never going to forget that encounter.
- The Red Sox-Yankees three game series that weekend. It was hard not to get swept up into that series, the entire city seemed to be wearing Red Sox gear. I became an honorary Red Sox fan that weekend, and was glad to see them enter the playoffs the following week, even though they were knocked out of the playoffs by the White Sox in a sweep.
- Going to a Red Sox-Yankees themed party at our friend Kent's apartment in Northeastern. I of course wore my Mets shirt, so that actually got me along with both sides. The neutral shirt worked. Both sides were happy it wasnt a shirt of the other team, so I was in like Flint.
- Seeing this kid punch out the annoying guy at the party. This one kid whose name I dont want to try to remember was bothering people all night. Eventually, he was thrown out of the party, and when he tried to throw a punch at one of the apartment owners, he was knocked out by another guy at this party.
- Kent's sticky as hell floor. My shoes got stuck walking on it, it was ridonkulous how I couldnt move easily there.
- Finding out that this guy was nicknamed E.P. (Ecuadorian Pimp) and he yelled Popcorn! every time he entered a room, one of the funniest things I ever saw, because once he yelled it, they yelled it right back at him. The door opened, POPCORN! 3 sec pause POPCORN! and he sat down on the couch like nothing was wrong. Good stuff.
- Sleeping on three folding chairs Fri night, knowing I was getting the comfy couch the next night. Made me sleep a whole lot better.
- Eating at Northeastern for lunch Saturday. Phenomenal dining hall, I am extremely jealous.
- Seeing a jolly black person work behind the counter of the dining hall. This is turning into some sort of phenomenon. Good ole Thelma here, a jolly black man at TCNJ, and a jolly black lady at Northeastern. If I see this in two more schools I go to, I know what the credentials are to work there.
- Playing basketball at NU. I'm not a big fan of playing basketball, but it was still fun. I can stand a few games playing every once in a while.
- Eating dinner at Applebees that night. Of course in Boston, I had to get clam chowder, which was amazing. But loss of points for no chicken there. How can a famous restaurant chain operate without chicken?! It wasnt like it was 1Am either, it was 1030 at night. They should have chicken!
- Ice tea from Lipton Ice Tea Mix. Surprisingly good, not sure why I havent had that before. Its on my grocery list next time I go out.
- Kent playing Rock Lobster from Family Guy a good 25 times while we were there. A little annoying, yes. But whenever I hear it, Ill think of the trip.
- The crowded as hell T-train. Ive never seen anything like this before. Like the train was full to the brim, and eight people still cram on as hard as they can. Best feeling ever is getting an inch of breathing room on that train.
- The fact that I bought four T tokens, used 2, and rode it 5 times, all legally. They need to fill a quota, and after that you dont have to put in tokens. Fat chance they'd ever do that in the New York train systems.
-92 cent hot dogs getting off the Chinatown bus. I dont know why this always happens, but the most delicious food is found in the most random places.
- Seeing the train conductor make a paper doll out of one of those train ticket reciepts. It shows they are human, good to know.
All in all it was one amazing trip. I def recommend doing this if u ever get the chance, and I am def glad I went and didnt stay at Rutgers that weekend.
